The Partnership for Safe Medicines (PSM) has voiced its support for Iowa House Study Bill 591 (HSB 591), a proposal aimed at improving regulation and oversight of medical spas and wellness clinics within the state. The organization urged Iowa's House Health and Human Services Committee to back the legislation, which introduces key measures to enhance patient safety.
Under HSB 591, medical spas and wellness clinics would be required to obtain licensing from Iowa’s Board of Pharmacy and adhere to dispensing requirements stipulated in the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA). The bill also calls for stricter oversight measures to close what PSM has called a "regulatory gap" surrounding med spas.
PSM emphasized the importance of this legislative effort in protecting patients. The organization stated that HSB 591 "would require medical spas and wellness clinics to be licensed by the state's Board of Pharmacy, to comply with dispensing requirements in the DSCSA, and be subject to stronger oversight measures."
The proposed bill represents a significant step forward in ensuring that med spas operate within a clear regulatory framework, reducing the risks associated with these establishments. PSM has been a consistent advocate for tighter controls in this industry, highlighting the need for more comprehensive oversight to safeguard public health.
