What does a laser handpiece refurbishment service do?
A handpiece refurbishment service takes a worn or failed laser or IPL handpiece and returns it to working order, usually by mail, for less than the cost of a new one from the manufacturer. Typical work includes replacing the flashlamp, diode stack, crystal, window or seals, fixing cooling leaks and triggers, cleaning the optics, recalibrating output and, on some systems, resetting the shot counter. Some vendors also sell refurbished handpieces outright. The differences that matter are which brands they repair, how fast they turn it around, what warranty covers the work, and whether they use OEM parts.

How we chose this list
We looked for companies whose own websites describe handpiece repair or refurbishment for aesthetic lasers and IPL systems, then checked four things a practice manager can confirm before shipping anything:
- Brand coverage. Does the company name your platform (Cutera, Candela, Cynosure/Palomar, Alma, Lumenis, Sciton, Syneron) on its repair pages?
- Published process. Does it explain how mail-in repair works, from estimate to return shipping?
- Turnaround and warranty. Does it state a typical turnaround or a warranty on the work?
- Parts. Does it say whether it uses OEM replacement parts?
The order is our editorial view, not a measure of results. Your platform and location may point you somewhere else. Many of these companies also repair whole systems; if the problem is in the console, not the handpiece, see our list of aesthetic laser repair services.
1. Medical Laser Services
Medical Laser Services (MLS) states it was founded in 1993 and works from a 28,000 square foot facility in Novi, Michigan, with 25 engineers and technicians on staff and field technicians placed around the US. It repairs handpieces in-house and also stocks replacement handpieces and handpiece optics.
What stands out:
- Brand list. MLS lists handpiece repair for 22 manufacturers, including Alma, Candela, Cutera, Cynosure, Lumenis, Palomar, Sciton and Hoya ConBio.
- Stated turnaround. It puts normal handpiece turnaround at about one week.
- LightSheer focus. It calls itself a worldwide leader in LightSheer handpiece repair, says it can repair current and obsolete LightSheer heads in 3–5 business days, and says it will beat any price for LightSheer repair. Its listed refurbishment steps include OEM-style diode replacement, relensing and alignment, and an umbilical replacement.
- Other repairs. It also repairs articulated arms, IPL heads, power supplies and circuit boards.
Right for: practices with a LightSheer or an older platform the manufacturer no longer supports. Ask: what warranty covers a handpiece repair, and whether it can send a loaner while yours is in the shop.
2. Laser Tech
Laser Tech buys, sells, rents and repairs aesthetic lasers from Miramar, Florida, and states it has done so since 2011. Its handpiece page lists common faults it fixes: cooling faults, water leaks, triggers, cracked lamps, cavities, crystals, fibers, broken shells, bad diodes and low energy.
What stands out:
- Same-day work. It says it can almost always repair a handpiece the same day it arrives by overnight shipping.
- Warranty. It offers a 90-day warranty on the replacement part and the labor.
- OEM parts. It states it uses OEM replacement parts.
- Named models. Its pages list Palomar Lux and StarLux, Alma Harmony and Soprano, Cutera ProWave, LimeLight and Titan, Lumenis One, and Sciton BBL handpieces. Its Cutera rebuild list includes flashlamps, flow tubes, calibration and a shot-count reset.
Right for: practices with a Palomar, Cutera, Alma or Sciton handpiece that want it back fast. Laser Tech notes it is not affiliated with or authorized by Syneron Candela. Ask: whether its work affects any remaining manufacturer coverage on your system.

Book a Demo3. Laser Service Solutions
Laser Service Solutions (LSS), based in Paulsboro, New Jersey, repairs aesthetic lasers, rents devices and sells new and pre-owned systems and parts. It repairs handpieces in-house for Alma, Candela, Cutera, Cynosure, Hoya ConBio and Palomar Icon, and asks you to contact it first if your brand isn't listed.
Its mail-in process is spelled out: ship the handpiece with a description of the problem, receive a detailed estimate and lead time, approve it, and LSS restores, cleans, tunes and tests the handpiece before sending it back. It also notes special shipping care in cold months, since many handpieces hold water. LSS sells preventive maintenance visits once or twice a year.
Right for: practices in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic that want one shop for handpiece repair, maintenance and a rental while they wait. Ask: the warranty on handpiece work, and whether a rental can cover the downtime. LSS also appears on our laser rental companies list.
4. Cresent Laser Technologies
Cresent Laser Technologies repairs aesthetic lasers and IPL equipment and states "we are experts in laser hand piece repair." It accepts handpiece repairs from anywhere in the US and offers on-site service in 12 Southeastern and mid-Atlantic states, from North Carolina to Louisiana. It also reports national repair contracts with several laser manufacturers.

5. The Laser Warehouse
The Laser Warehouse in Deerfield Beach, Florida, has resold used aesthetic lasers, IPL systems and handpieces since 2006 and says it owns its inventory rather than brokering. It sells refurbished Alma, Cutera, Palomar and Syneron handpieces and says pre-owned handpieces can cost up to 70% less than retail. It also offers a free estimate to repair a broken handpiece and free phone troubleshooting for error codes.
Right for: practices deciding between repairing an old handpiece and replacing it with a tested used one. Ask: what testing a refurbished handpiece goes through, what warranty comes with it, and how many pulses remain.
6. The Laser Agent
The Laser Agent buys and sells used aesthetic lasers and offers repair and maintenance. Its service page says handpiece refurbishing "includes resetting shot counts, full repair, and cosmetic laser repair," and it also lists on-site service across the country, VBeam Perfecta dye kit installs, Luxar CO2 refurbishment, and in-house painting of devices.
Right for: practices that already work with The Laser Agent on buying or selling a system. Ask: brand coverage, turnaround and warranty for handpiece work, none of which the site publishes.
7. Focus Laser Marketing
Focus Laser Marketing sells new and pre-owned lasers and offers clinical training and business programs; it states it was founded in 2013. Its repair page lists handpiece repair and calibration, fiber and flashlamp replacement, and energy output verification, with a written estimate before work begins. Its maintenance page says it covers practices in the US, Canada and Australia.
Right for: practices that want repair from the same team that trains staff on the device. Ask: whether handpiece repair is done in-house or sent to a partner.
Questions to ask any handpiece refurbishment service
- Which parts will you replace, and are they OEM? Ask for an itemized estimate that names the lamp, diode, crystal or window going in.
- What warranty covers the work, and for how many pulses or days? Compare a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty against none.
- Will you reset the shot counter, and what does that mean for my system? Ask whether a reset or third-party repair affects any remaining manufacturer warranty or service plan.
- What output do you verify before shipping it back? Ask for the measured energy or fluence on a test report.
- Can you lend or rent a handpiece while mine is in the shop? A loaner can save a week of canceled appointments.
- Do you consider this servicing or remanufacturing? The FDA's Remanufacturing of Medical Devices guidance, finalized in May 2024, explains the difference and the responsibilities that come with remanufacturing.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to refurbish a laser handpiece than to buy a new one?
Usually, yes, because a refurbishment replaces only the worn parts. The Laser Warehouse, for example, says pre-owned handpieces can cost up to 70% less than retail. Get a written estimate first, since a handpiece with several failed parts can approach the price of a refurbished replacement.
How long does handpiece repair take?
Most published turnarounds run from same day to about a week, plus shipping. Laser Tech says it can almost always repair a handpiece the same day it arrives, and Medical Laser Services states about one week for most handpieces and 3–5 business days for LightSheer heads.
Will third-party handpiece repair void my manufacturer warranty?
It can, so ask your manufacturer before you ship. If your system is still under warranty or an OEM service plan, the manufacturer's own handpiece exchange is often the safer route; third-party repair makes the most sense once coverage has ended. If you're weighing a plan, see our list of aesthetic equipment extended warranties.
What wears out first on an IPL or laser handpiece?
Flashlamps, cooling seals and windows are the most common wear items. Repair shops also list cracked crystals, failed diodes, water leaks, broken triggers and low energy output as frequent faults.
