For med spa owners and medical directors. Updated October 2, 2026 · Prepared by Prospyr. Prospyr makes practice software, not aesthetic devices, and none of the manufacturers below is a Prospyr product or partner. Each summary reflects what the company publishes on its own website, checked October 2026. Clearances, specifications, pricing and service terms change, so get every number in writing before you buy or lease.

What does a body contouring machine do?

A body contouring machine reduces fat, builds or tones muscle, or tightens skin without surgery, using cold, heat, laser light or electromagnetic energy. In a med spa, the main types are cryolipolysis (freezing fat), laser or radiofrequency heating of fat, muscle stimulation (HIFEM or EMS), and combination systems that pair fat reduction with muscle work. The choices that matter for a practice are which areas the device is cleared for, how much staff time each session needs, the per-treatment consumable cost, and how many sessions a patient will need.

How we chose this list

We included manufacturers that sell a body contouring device to medical practices and publish real detail about it on their own site. We then looked at four things a practice manager can check before a demo: whether the company states an FDA clearance and the cleared areas, how much staff time a session needs (hands-free or operator-held), how clearly it explains the technology, and whether pricing or financing is visible. We left out home-use devices, used-equipment resellers and wraps or massage tools. The order is our editorial view, not a measure of results. A device that works well in one market may not suit your patient mix.

1. Allergan Aesthetics (CoolSculpting Elite)

CoolSculpting Elite is made by Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company. It uses cryolipolysis, controlled cooling that the company says "freezes away up to 20%–25% of treated fat permanently." Allergan states it is FDA-cleared for visible fat bulges in the thigh, abdomen and flank, bra fat, back fat, the banana roll and upper arm in patients with a BMI of 30 or under, and in the submental and submandibular areas at a BMI of 46.2 or under.

What stands out:

  • Patient recognition. Allergan reports more than 17 million treatments performed worldwide, and patients often search the brand by name.
  • Companion device. It also sells CoolTone for muscle toning, and notes the combination of CoolTone and CoolSculpting has not been evaluated by the FDA.
  • Patient savings program. The consumer site promotes savings through Allē, Allergan's patient loyalty program.

Right for: practices that want a recognized brand and already work with Allergan for injectables. Ask: the applicator and treatment-card cost per cycle, and how many applicators you need to run two patients at once.

2. BTL (Emsculpt NEO)

BTL makes Emsculpt NEO, which combines HIFEM muscle stimulation with synchronized RF heating of fat in a 30-minute session. BTL reports 25% muscle growth, 30% fat reduction and 87% patient satisfaction, and lists several FDA-cleared indications, including noninvasive fat reduction and muscle strengthening, for patients 18 and older. BTL says it has served the medical community for over 30 years and also sells Emtone, Emface and Emsella.

What stands out:

  • Two results in one visit. Fat and muscle are treated in the same session, which suits patients who want definition rather than only fat loss.
  • Wider product line. BTL also sells devices for other specialties, so a multi-service practice can stay with one service provider.

Right for: practices whose patients ask for muscle definition, including fitness-focused patients. Ask: whether applicators carry per-treatment fees, and the service and warranty terms after year one.

3. Cutera (truSculpt)

Cutera sells truSculpt, a monopolar RF body device with three compatible handpieces, including hands-free 2 MHz (40 cm²) and handheld 1 MHz (16 cm²) options. Cutera describes a single 15-minute hands-free treatment and reports "an average of 24% fat reduction." Its stated indication for the 2 MHz handpiece is reduction in circumference of the abdomen and non-invasive lipolysis of the abdomen. Cutera pairs truSculpt with truFlex muscle stimulation and markets the two together as truBody.

Right for: practices that need short, hands-free sessions to fit a busy schedule. Ask: the cost per treatment and whether truFlex must be bought with truSculpt to offer the combined protocol.

4. InMode (EvolveX and BodyTite)

InMode, based in Irvine, California, sells two kinds of body device. EvolveX is hands-free: eight bipolar RF applicators for skin and the layer below it, and four EMS applicators for muscle, which can run alternately in one visit. BodyTite on the IgniteRF platform is minimally invasive RF-assisted lipocoagulation through a cannula; InMode states IgniteRF is "indicated for procedures requiring soft tissue contraction, electrocoagulation, hemostasis, and fractional treatments." The EvolveX page notes that clearances and approved uses differ by country.

Right for: practices that offer both non-invasive sessions and, with a surgeon on staff, minimally invasive procedures. Ask: the US clearance for each EvolveX mode, and the supervision BodyTite requires. Our RF microneedling device list covers InMode's Morpheus8.

5. Cynosure Lutronic (SculpSure)

Cynosure Lutronic, headquartered in Westford, Massachusetts, sells SculpSure, a 1060 nm diode laser with contact cooling. Cynosure calls it "the world's first FDA-cleared laser device for non-invasive lipolysis" of the abdomen, flanks, back, inner and outer thighs and submental area. It lists 25-minute treatments per area, up to 24% fat reduction, results from six weeks and best results around 12 weeks, and BMI limits of 30 for body and 49 for submental use.

Right for: practices that want a heat-based alternative to cryolipolysis, including chin treatments. Ask: what the Platinum update adds and what an upgrade costs if you already own an earlier SculpSure.

6. Venus Concept (Venus Bliss MAX)

Venus Concept, headquartered in Toronto, sells Venus Bliss MAX, which combines a 1064 nm diode laser for fat, FlexMAX EMS for muscle and (MP)² multi-polar RF with pulsed electromagnetic fields for cellulite. Venus lists clearances for non-invasive lipolysis of the abdomen, flanks, back and thighs (BMI 30 or under), cellulite reduction and muscle conditioning. It reports up to a 41% reduction in adipose layer thickness and says the system collects usage data for practice reporting.

Right for: practices that want fat, muscle and cellulite treatments on one console. Ask: the purchase and financing options, and what usage data Venus collects and who owns it.

7. Alma Lasers (Alma PrimeX)

Alma Lasers sells Alma PrimeX, which pairs guided ultrasound for fat with 40.68 MHz RF heating it calls AlmaWave. Alma lists 12 applicators, from UltraWave for stubborn fat to a SpeedSculpt applicator for small areas like the chin, and says PrimeX treats circumference, loose skin, cellulite and facial tightening across skin types I to VI. Alma also sells Accent Prime and BeautiFill laser-assisted fat harvesting. The PrimeX page did not state FDA clearances when we checked.

Right for: practices that want one platform for body and face tightening. Ask: the US clearance for each applicator, and which applicators come in the base price.

8. Cartessa Aesthetics (Physiq 360)

Cartessa Aesthetics, with US offices in Melville, New York, sells Physiq 360, which combines EMS for muscle with laser energy for fat and delivers them in sequence in one session. It has four independently controlled applicators held by body bands, a patient comfort button and a lymphatic drainage handpiece. Cartessa also sells Onda Pro and LipoAI. The Physiq 360 page did not state FDA clearances when we checked.

Right for: practices that want a hands-free combination device from a US distributor. Ask: the clearance for each modality, and how many sessions a typical protocol needs (its examples show five).

9. Erchonia (Zerona VZ8)

Erchonia, based in Fountain Inn, South Carolina, makes the Zerona VZ8, a hands-free low-level laser with eight 405 nm violet diodes. Erchonia states the device is "FDA market-cleared for non-invasive body contouring — circumference reduction of the waist, hips and thighs" for prescription use. It is non-thermal, and Erchonia reports an average of 3.72 inches lost from waist, hips and thighs over two weeks on its protocol.

Right for: practices that want a no-heat, no-cold option with low staff involvement. Ask: the session count and frequency in the two-week protocol, and how results are measured.

10. Rohrer Aesthetics (BodyTone)

Rohrer Aesthetics, based in Homewood, Alabama, sells BodyTone, a muscle-stimulation device that it says delivers about 20,000 contractions in a 30-minute, 12-phase session through eight applicators that can run at once. It lists the device at $69,995 (as of October 2026) and offers financing. The page did not state an FDA clearance when we checked.

Right for: practices adding muscle toning that want to know the price up front. Ask: the clearance and indication, and the warranty and service terms.

Questions to ask any body contouring device company

  1. What is the exact FDA clearance? Get the 510(k) number, cleared areas and BMI limits in writing, and keep your marketing inside them.
  2. What does each session cost you? Ask about applicator fees, treatment cards, gel pads or cycle counts, and what happens when they run out.
  3. How much staff time does a session need? Hands-free devices free a provider; handheld devices tie one up for the full treatment.
  4. How many sessions is a standard protocol? Price your packages from the manufacturer's protocol, not a single session.
  5. What training and marketing support is included? Ask how many providers are trained and whether patient materials are included.
  6. What happens when it breaks? Get warranty length, loaner policy and the price of service after year one. See our list of extended warranty providers.
  7. Who may operate it in your state? Delegation rules vary; confirm with your medical director before booking patients.

Where Prospyr fits

Body contouring is sold in series, so the machine pays off only if patients finish their course. Prospyr lets a practice sell multi-session protocols as packages or memberships, book each session in the series, and keep measurements and before-and-after photos with each visit. For documentation, see our non-surgical body contouring documentation checklist, or book a practice demo.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best body contouring machine for a med spa?

There is no single best machine; it depends on whether your patients want fat reduction, muscle definition or both. Fat-only devices such as CoolSculpting Elite or SculpSure suit patients with specific bulges, while combination systems like Emsculpt NEO add muscle work. Compare cleared areas, session time and per-treatment cost before choosing.

How much does a body contouring machine cost?

Most manufacturers do not publish prices. Rohrer Aesthetics is an exception, listing BodyTone at $69,995 as of October 2026. Add consumables, service and training to any quote, and compare the total against the package price you expect to charge.

Which body contouring treatments are FDA cleared?

Each manufacturer's clearance covers specific areas and patients, not body contouring in general. Allergan, BTL, Cutera, Cynosure, Venus Concept and Erchonia describe cleared indications on their sites; for others, ask for the clearance in writing.

Do hands-free devices make more money?

They can, because one provider can supervise a session while doing other work. Whether that pays off depends on your booking volume and how many applicators the device runs at once. Check the per-session consumable cost too.
