For med spas and aesthetic practices. Updated October 2, 2026 · Prepared by Prospyr. Prospyr makes practice software, not laser safety training, and none of the organizations below is a Prospyr product. Each summary reflects what the organization publishes on its own website, checked October 2026. Course dates, prices and approvals change, so confirm everything in writing before you register.

What does laser safety officer training cover for a med spa?

Laser safety officer (LSO) training prepares one person in your practice to run its laser safety program: classifying each device, setting the nominal hazard zone around the treatment room, choosing eyewear with the right optical density, writing laser policies, training operators and keeping records. For healthcare, courses are built on ANSI Z136.3, the American National Standard for safe use of lasers in health care. Most medical LSO (MLSO) courses run one to two days, live or virtual, and end with a certificate of completion. Certification, such as the Board of Laser Safety's CMLSO, is a separate exam.

How we chose this list

We started from the Board of Laser Safety's list of approved medical LSO courses and added organizations that publish a medical LSO program. Then we checked four things a practice manager can confirm before registering:

  1. Medical focus. Is the course built on ANSI Z136.3, the healthcare standard, rather than the general Z136.1?
  2. Format and time away. Can your LSO attend virtually or on demand, and how many days does it take?
  3. Published price and credits. Does the organization list tuition and continuing education hours?
  4. Path to certification. Does the course meet a certification prerequisite, or include an exam?

Med spa specialists are rare in this category. Most courses were written for hospitals and surgery centers, and we say where a provider names aesthetic staff. The order is our editorial view, not a measure of results.

1. Laser Institute of America (LIA)

Laser Institute of America describes itself as the secretariat and accredited standards developer for the ANSI Z136 laser safety standards, including Z136.3 for health care. Its Medical Laser Safety Officer training is for "anybody who has been assigned the responsibility of LSO in a medical facility," and LIA states it meets the LSO training requirements outlined by ANSI, OSHA and The Joint Commission.

What stands out:

  • Three formats. Live in person, live virtual over Zoom, or on demand with 30 days of access.
  • Published price. As of October 2026, $895, or $795 for LIA members, for a 2-day course. The next listed virtual dates are November 21 to 22, 2026.
  • Credits. It lists 12 contact hours and 1.5 BLS certification maintenance points.
  • Materials. In-person attendees receive the course manual, the ANSI Z136.3 standard, a certificate and sample documentation. Virtual attendees receive the manual and certificate.
  • BLS approved. Both the live and online MLSO courses appear on the Board of Laser Safety's approved list for the CMLSO exam.

Right for: a med spa that wants the standard-setter's course and needs the on-demand option to fit around a treatment schedule. Ask: whether the on-demand version meets your state's and your malpractice carrier's expectations, and whether virtual attendees can buy the Z136.3 standard at a discount.

2. Rockwell Laser Industries

Rockwell Laser Industries reports more than 40 years of laser safety training and consulting. Its Medical Laser Safety Officer course (M-135) runs 2 days over video, with a curriculum it states is based on ANSI Z136.3, OSHA, The Joint Commission and state standards.

What stands out:

  • Hazard analysis. The course covers bioeffects by wavelength and the calculations behind maximum permissible exposure, nominal hazard zones and eyewear optical density.
  • Materials. Students receive a course notebook, the ANSI Z136.3-2024 standard, Rockwell's Medical User's Guide and its LAZAN Quick Calc hazard analysis software.
  • Published price. As of October 2026, $895.
  • Credits. It lists 18.6 California nursing contact hours, 16 AAHP credits and BCSP certification maintenance credits.
  • Dates. Listed sessions include December 3 to 4, 2026 and February 18 to 19, 2027.

Right for: an LSO who wants to run the numbers on each device rather than rely on the manufacturer's label. Ask: which aesthetic devices the examples cover, such as IPL, picosecond and fractional lasers.

3. Laser Training Institute

Laser Training Institute is a division of Professional Medical Education Association, a nonprofit it says has done only medical laser education since 1978. Its sister division, the National Council on Laser Certification (NCLC), runs the certification exam. It lists physicians, nurses, aestheticians, administrators and practice owners among its audiences, and its MLSO page names med spas among the facilities it says need a trained LSO.

What stands out:

  • Training plus certification. The 2-day MLSO course is listed at $995 and includes the NCLC MLSO certification exam. Day one alone is $495 and serves as an LSO refresher or laser operator training. It lists early-registration and group discounts.
  • Faculty. It names Penny Smalley, RN, as chair of the ANSI Z136.3 committee, and Gregory Absten as executive director.
  • Formats. Live seminars in Columbus, Ohio, private Zoom sessions, online courses and in-house training at your facility on your lasers.
  • Audits. It offers ANSI-based laser safety audits through an affiliate.

Right for: a med spa owner or lead aesthetician who wants training and a credential in one trip. Ask: whether you want an NCLC credential or the BLS CMLSO; the Laser Training Institute course does not appear on the BLS approved list.

4. MLSO Excellence

MLSO Excellence is a 2-day virtual Medical Laser Safety Officer course from Perioperative Consultants, LLC and MD Publishing. It is led by Patti Owens and Vangie Dennis, both registered nurses with the CMLSO credential, and lists aesthetic personnel among its audiences alongside perioperative nurses, dental and veterinary staff.

What stands out: As of October 2026, it lists $795, with 15 California Board of Registered Nursing contact hours. It states the course is approved by the Board of Laser Safety to meet the CMLSO exam training prerequisite, and lists four virtual sessions in 2026, the next on November 7 to 8.

Right for: a nurse injector or clinical lead who wants a BLS-approved course without travel. Ask: how much of the material addresses outpatient aesthetic lasers rather than operating room systems.

5. Reliable Laser Solutions

Reliable Laser Solutions runs a Medical Laser Safety Officer course taught by a certified medical LSO it says has more than 25 years of experience. The standard course is one day. An optional second day adds hands-on training on the facility's own laser systems for up to 10 operators. It states the course meets the Board of Laser Safety prerequisite for the CMLSO exam. Courses are held in local hotels, and pricing is not published.

Right for: a group with several devices that wants its operators trained on the actual equipment. Ask: the price for the hands-on day, travel costs, and whether the trainer has worked in an aesthetic practice.

6. Board of Laser Safety (BLS)

Board of Laser Safety does not teach courses. It awards two certifications: Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO) for industrial and research settings, and Certified Medical Laser Safety Officer (CMLSO) for any medical setting, which it says includes cosmetic and therapeutic use.

What stands out: CMLSO candidates need a BLS-approved MLSO course, one year performing MLSO duties under ANSI Z136.3, two professional references, and a qualifying education or medical license. As of October 2026, it lists a $55 application fee, a $225 CMLSO exam fee, a $125 retake fee and a $165 recertification fee. Its approved MLSO list includes LIA, Rockwell, MLSO Excellence and Reliable Laser Solutions.

Right for: an LSO who has run your program for a year and wants a credential. Ask: which certification maintenance points your next course earns.

Questions to ask any laser safety officer training provider

  1. Is it built on ANSI Z136.3? Medical courses should teach the healthcare standard, not only the general Z136.1.
  2. Does it meet a certification prerequisite? Check the Board of Laser Safety's approved course list, or ask which certification the included exam awards.
  3. Will it cover our devices? Bring your device list (diode, Nd:YAG, IPL, picosecond, fractional) and ask whether the hazard calculations include them.
  4. What does the certificate prove? A certificate of completion is not the same as certification. Ask what your state and insurer expect.
  5. Are templates included? Policies, audit checklists and staff in-service slides save the LSO weeks of writing.
  6. How often is refresher training needed? Ask the provider what it recommends and what a refresher costs, and record the date.
  7. What is the total cost? Count tuition, the standard itself, the exam and time away from treatments.

Where Prospyr fits

Prospyr does not provide laser training. Where your LSO's work touches your system is the treatment record: device, settings and test spots documented in each aesthetic EMR chart, and before-and-after photos kept in a media archive. If you are reviewing your practice software too, book a practice demo.

Laser safety sits alongside the rest of your safety program. See our lists of OSHA training providers for medical offices and HIPAA compliance consultants for clinics, and our med spa safety inspection checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Does a med spa need a laser safety officer?

The training providers we reviewed say yes. The Laser Training Institute states that every health care facility, including med spas, needs a trained LSO, and LIA's course is aimed at anyone assigned the LSO role in a medical facility. Your state may add its own rules for who may operate lasers, so check with your state medical or nursing board and your malpractice carrier.

How long does laser safety officer training take?

Most medical LSO courses take 1 to 2 days. LIA, Rockwell, MLSO Excellence and the Laser Training Institute each list 2-day courses, and Reliable Laser Solutions lists a one-day course with an optional hands-on day.

How much does LSO training cost?

Published prices range from about $795 to $995 for a 2-day medical course, as of October 2026. Add the cost of the ANSI Z136.3 standard if it is not included, and $280 for the BLS application and CMLSO exam if you pursue that credential.

What is the difference between an LSO certificate and CMLSO certification?

A certificate of completion shows you finished a course. CMLSO is a certification from the Board of Laser Safety that requires an approved course, a year of experience, references and a passed exam.

Is online laser safety officer training accepted?

Often, yes. LIA's on-demand Medical Laser Safety Officer Online course and the virtual MLSO Excellence course both appear on the Board of Laser Safety's approved list for the CMLSO exam. Confirm with your state board and insurer if either names a specific requirement.

How often does an LSO need refresher training?

Providers differ. The Laser Training Institute says recurrency training is required at least once every 5 years and recommends it annually. Ask your provider what it recommends and record each date in your laser policy file.
