How can a med spa owner find benchmarks and KPI data?

Med spa owners find benchmarks in three places: industry reports (AmSpa's Medical Spa State of the Industry Report is the only one built for med spas), procedure statistics from plastic surgery societies, and advisory firms that compare your own numbers against data from the practices they advise. Reports tell you what the industry looks like. Advisory benchmarks tell you where your practice stands on labor cost, provider utilization, revenue per hour and margin by service. Most owners need one of each, and their own clean data before either is useful.

How we chose this list

We looked for resources an owner can actually use to compare a practice against others, then checked four things:

  1. Aesthetic relevance. Does it name med spas, aesthetic procedures or plastic surgery as its subject?
  2. A clear source. Does it say where the data comes from (member surveys, surgeon reporting, advisory firms' own practice data)?
  3. Access. Is it free, priced, or members only, and is that stated?
  4. Action. Does it lead to targets you can track, not just headlines?

The order is our editorial view, not a measure of quality. Reports and advisory firms do different jobs, so read them as a set.

1. AmSpa Medical Spa State of the Industry Report

The American Med Spa Association (AmSpa) publishes the Medical Spa State of the Industry Report. Prospyr is an AmSpa Platinum partner.

What stands out:

  • Built for med spas. AmSpa states it covers revenue and expenses, single versus multi-location practices, hiring and attrition, salaries by position, treatment offerings (injectables, energy devices, wellness, esthetics), patient demographics, spending and acquisition sources, and ownership structures including private equity.
  • Published price. $995 for a one-time digital download for non-members as of October 2026. AmSpa lists the report as included with AmSpa Plus membership.
  • A free starting point. A free executive summary is available without membership.

Right for: owners who want the industry baseline for compensation, revenue and treatment mix before a budget or pay review. Ask: the sample size and edition year, so you know how current the numbers are.

2. Maven Financial Partners

Maven Financial Partners is a fractional CFO firm in Richardson, Texas that states it works with med spas "from solo injectors to multi-location medspa groups." It offers a free benchmark audit and monthly scorecards with treatment-level profitability, provider performance metrics and benchmarks against similar med spas.

What stands out:

  • Benchmarks tied to your books, not a generic survey.
  • Treatment and provider profitability broken out each month.
  • MSO support for practices that run under a management services structure.

Right for: owners who want a finance partner to set targets and review them monthly. Ask: what the free audit compares you against, how many med spas are in its comparison set, and what the monthly engagement costs.

3. Terri Ross Consulting

Terri Ross Consulting, based in South Florida, sells a Business Evaluation for aesthetic practices. It states it reviews financial performance, KPIs across departments, provider productivity and capacity, patient acquisition cost, revenue per hour, pricing, compensation, marketing return, retail percentage and patient lifetime value. Results are compared with industry standards and its internal benchmarks.

What stands out: the deliverables are spelled out: a written report, a 90-minute strategy call, a prioritized action plan, performance targets, and two 60-minute follow-up calls at 30 and 60 days.

Right for: owners who want one outside review with targets, not an ongoing retainer. Ask: the price, and how big its internal benchmark set is.

4. Ward Advisory

Ward Advisory is a fractional CFO firm in Dallas–Fort Worth, Texas, founded by Tanner Ward, for established med spas and aesthetic practices with about $1 million to $10 million+ in revenue. Its Med Spa Financial Operating System covers segmented financials by service line and provider, cash forecasting, diagnostic KPIs and a monthly close-diagnose-decide-measure rhythm.

It publishes illustrative reference points for a practice near $2 million in revenue: labor at 45% against a 41% reference, and product cost at 23% against 20%. It is careful to say service mix, geography, staffing model and accounting classification can explain some or all of a gap.

Right for: owners who suspect margin is leaking and want it traced to a cause. Ask: how scope and fees are set; it states investment is set after it understands the problem.

5. ASPS Procedural Statistics

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) publishes an annual Procedural Statistics report as a free download; the 2025 edition was the latest when we checked. It covers surgical procedures and minimally invasive treatments including neuromodulators, fillers, laser skin treatments and hair removal. ASPS states the data comes from member surgeons and its affiliate CosmetAssure.

Right for: owners tracking national demand for the treatments they offer. Ask yourself: these are procedure counts from plastic surgeons, not med spa revenue or staffing data.

6. The Aesthetic Society statistics

The Aesthetic Society (the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) posts its annual aesthetic statistics as free PDFs, with editions back to 1997. The most recent edition listed on its statistics page when we checked was 2023. Its coverage spans surgical and nonsurgical aesthetic procedures.

Right for: owners who want long-run trends by procedure. Check: the edition year before you quote a figure.

7. ISAPS Global Survey

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) runs an annual Global Survey of aesthetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed by plastic surgeons. Full reports and press releases are free online for survey years back to 2010. ISAPS stated the 2025 survey had closed and was being analyzed when we checked.

Right for: groups comparing US demand with other markets. Check: it relies on voluntary surgeon responses, so treat country figures as estimates.

8. Vallexa Advisors

Vallexa Advisors is a healthcare M&A firm with a medical aesthetics practice. Its med spa page publishes valuation ranges as of June 2026: most single-location med spas between 4.0x and 7.0x EBITDA, multi-location operators between 7.0x and 9.0x, and branded platforms up to 12.0x. It offers a free valuation calculator.

Right for: owners who want to know which KPIs move the value of the practice. Ask: how it defines adjusted EBITDA, and note its fees are success-based, so it earns on a sale. For more on sale-side advisors, see our valuation firms list.

9. ISPA U.S. Spa Industry Study

The International Spa Association (ISPA) publishes the U.S. Spa Industry Study, which it states PricewaterhouseCoopers has conducted since 1999, with a 2026 edition listed. It also runs snapshot surveys on performance, employees, marketing and retail. The reports are for members only, and the library doesn't say how medical spas are represented.

Right for: med spas that also run facials, massage or body treatments and want spa-side benchmarks. Ask: ISPA whether medical spas are broken out.

10. MGMA DataDive

MGMA DataDive is the Medical Group Management Association's benchmarking tool, with data sets for provider compensation and productivity, management and staff pay, financials and operations, and CPT-level procedural profiles across 100+ specialties. Pricing isn't published.

Right for: surgeon-led groups and physician-owned practices benchmarking provider pay and overhead. Check: its page doesn't say how cash-pay med spas are represented, so confirm the specialty data before you buy.

Questions to ask any benchmarking source

  1. Where does the data come from? Member surveys, surgeon reporting and an advisory firm's own practice data each have different biases.
  2. How many practices are in it, and how many look like mine? Ask for the sample by size, region and single versus multi-location.
  3. How current is it? Check the edition year and the period the data covers.
  4. How is each KPI defined? Revenue per hour, utilization and labor cost can be calculated several ways. Use the same formula they did.
  5. What do I get after the report? A target and a plan are worth more than a percentile.
  6. Will you sign a BAA? Any firm that reviews schedules, charts or patient-level data from your practice software should.

Where Prospyr fits

Benchmarks only help if your own numbers are clean and calculated the same way every month. Prospyr's analytics dashboards cover provider sales, provider utilization, revenue by service and patient retention, which are the figures most advisors ask for first. Groups can compare locations with multi-location reporting. See how it works for your practice and book a practice demo.

Frequently asked questions

What KPIs should a med spa track?

Start with revenue per provider hour, provider utilization, rebooking rate, patient retention, labor cost as a share of revenue and product cost by service. Our guide to med spa KPIs and benchmark formulas shows how to calculate each one. Track them monthly before you compare them with anyone else's.

Is there a free med spa benchmark report?

Partly. AmSpa offers a free executive summary of its State of the Industry Report, and ASPS, The Aesthetic Society and ISAPS publish procedure statistics for free. Detailed med spa financial benchmarks usually come from the paid AmSpa report or an advisory firm's review.

How often should a med spa benchmark its numbers?

Review your own KPIs monthly and compare against an outside benchmark once or twice a year, or before a big decision like a new hire, device or location. If you're weighing a price change, our list of med spa pricing consultants covers firms that model it.

Do multi-location groups need different benchmarks?

Yes. Groups should compare each location against the others with the same formulas, then against outside data. Our list of multi-location med spa consultants covers firms that set up group dashboards.
