After your laser tattoo removal treatment

Redness, swelling and a little blistering are expected after laser tattoo removal. Following these steps helps the area heal between sessions.

The first 24 hours

  • Redness, swelling and a little blistering can appear after treatment. This is expected.
  • Wash the area and apply antibiotic ointment as your provider tells you. This is often for a few days.
  • Moisturize and cover the area until the skin heals.
  • Dressing, ointment or moisturizer we recommend: ______________________

The first week

  • Keep covering the area until the skin has healed.
  • Your skin needs time to heal between sessions, and your body, not the laser, clears the broken-up ink. Your tattoo should lighten after each treatment.
  • Light or dark spots can appear. These tend to go away within 6 to 12 months.
  • Keep every appointment. Each treatment removes more ink.

What to avoid

  • Sun on the treated skin. Protect it for 3 months, ideally with clothing that blocks light completely. White and yellow shirts can let light through.
  • Tanning. Scarring is more likely when high laser energy meets tanned skin.
  • Tattoo removal creams, ointments, do-it-yourself kits and salt scrubbing. The FDA warns they have no proven effect and can cause burns, rashes and scars.

Call us if

  • Blistering that is getting worse, a burn or an open wound.
  • Redness, swelling or pain that is not improving between sessions.
  • Changes in skin texture or anything that looks like scarring.
  • The treated tattoo turning darker. This can happen with some lighter inks.

In an emergency, call 911.

Why the sun rule runs three months

The AAD page says to protect treated skin from the sun for 3 months, and the best way is clothing that covers the area and blocks light completely. It shows a photo where white and yellow shirts let light through.

Most aftercare sheets say only "avoid sun." A specific number and a tip about thin clothing is something a patient can follow.

Tattoo removal fading cream and DIY methods

Patients ask whether a cream or a home method works as well. The AAD page repeats the FDA warning: there is no evidence that tattoo removal creams, ointments or kits remove a tattoo, and they often contain strong acids that can cause a rash, burn or permanent scar. It also warns against salabrasion, which means scrubbing salt into raw skin, because of the risk of serious infection and scarring.

The template includes this as an avoid line, so the handout answers the question before the patient has to ask.

How to edit and print your laser tattoo removal handout

  1. Add your practice name and phone number. Both print at the top and bottom of the handout.
  2. Read each line. Uncheck what does not match your protocol, rewrite what needs your wording, and fill in the blanks marked "Fill in".
  3. Add your own lines for products, follow-up dates or anything specific to your devices.
  4. Show it to your medical director. Then print it, save it as a PDF, or copy it as plain text for your patient portal or a text message.

Your text stays in your browser. Only the practice name and phone are saved in the page address, so you can bookmark or share the link with your team.

Once the handout is final, it works best when it goes out automatically. Prospyr's digital intake and charting keep each patient's instructions with their visit, and the med spa software page shows how the rest of the practice fits around them. For related handouts, see the laser hair removal aftercare template and the Fitzpatrick skin type quiz.

What this template leaves out

  • Antibiotic names, strengths or schedules. The AAD says your provider may recommend an antibiotic ointment, and the line leaves the product for you to fill in.
  • Laser type, fluence and session spacing. Those are provider decisions.
  • Treatment of permanent makeup or special inks. Edit the lines for your protocol.

It is a template to review and edit with your medical director before giving it to patients. It is not medical advice, and it does not replace your provider's instructions for a specific patient.

Frequently asked questions

What are the aftercare instructions for laser tattoo removal?

Wash the area and apply antibiotic ointment as your provider directs, moisturize and cover it until it heals, and protect the skin from the sun for 3 months. The AAD says redness, swelling and a little blistering are expected after treatment.

How long should I keep a tattoo removal treatment covered?

The AAD says to cover the area until the skin heals. How long that takes depends on the laser and the area, so your provider should set the timing. The template leaves a blank for your dressing instructions.

How long should I stay out of the sun after tattoo removal?

The AAD says to protect treated skin from the sun for 3 months, ideally with clothing that completely blocks light. Scarring is more likely when a high-energy laser is used on tanned skin, according to a peer-reviewed review.

Is blistering normal after laser tattoo removal?

A little blistering is expected, according to the AAD, along with redness and swelling. Blistering that gets worse, a burn or an open wound is a reason to call the practice.

How long do dark or light spots last after laser tattoo removal?

Light or dark spots tend to disappear within 6 to 12 months, according to the AAD. A review of laser tattoo removal found hyperpigmentation was the most common adverse effect, seen in 4.8 percent of patients in a large prospective study.

Can I use tattoo removal cream instead of laser removal?

No evidence shows that removal creams, ointments or kits remove a tattoo, and the FDA warns they can burn the skin or leave a scar. This is the FDA warning as quoted by the AAD. Home salt scrubbing carries risks of serious infection and scarring.
